Defensive leaders....

There is some debate about who should be the leader of a defense. ( Does audibles: like QB of defense) because there are advantages and disadvantages to each. I believe it would be the safety because they seem to understand the offense and are the 'extra players'. but there is only one way to find out for sure.

 linebacker:

Advantages:
  • In the center of the field where he can get everyones ears on him
  • The majority of the players can see him.
  • They are usually big and can make themselves the authority
  • Is used to being in coverage, playing Man on Man or blitzing.
Disadvantages:
  • Can't be seen by  DE's and DT's .
  • Is too much of a leader, and when a mistake comes hes the center  of the center of attention.
  • He can make mistakes when it comes to the passing games.

 Defensive End and Defensive Tackle:

Advantages:
  • They are infront of everyone, allowing them to be seen.
  • They figure out the snap count allowing them to know how much time is left to do an audible.
  • They usually do only one thing on defense which doesn't let them like make fulls of themselves and lose momentum.
  • They are usually not the most well-known position on the field, so they would have less pressure on them.

Disadvantages:
  • They may get confused between the snap count the quarterback does and the signals needed for the audibles.
  • Signals screamed are not heard by most of the other teams
  • A strong offensive team may be able to pinpoint some of the basic moves or audibles of a defense
  • A good quarterback will learn to change the snap count often to disable the second advantage written above.
  • They are close to the line of scrimmage making it hard to get a view of the whole field and it's players
                    Cornerback

Advantages:
  • They are usually not the center of attention on the field and have less pressure on their shoulders
  • Usually only have one task at hand and that is to stop the WR from getting open
Disadvantages:
  • Do not have a full view of the entier field.
  • They can't yell audibles well from one side of the field to the other
  • They can't do signals using the body because most of the players can't see them.
  • They can't do the audibles any how because in some cases they are in Man on Man defense. they have to keep their mind on the WR
  • They usually don't know the snap count so they don't know how much time there is to do an audible

Safety

Advantages:
  • Have a clear view of the entier field allowing them to make reads
  • They can be heard easily as they are usually in the center of the field.
  • a good Safety can do anything giving him an air of authority and little room for weakness
  • They are the extra players and can be used for basicly anything the defense asks of them
  • They can be the center of the media, depending on the player that can end up badly or end up good
  • They have free hands (don't have to get into a pre-snap posture) allowing them to pass on signals
Disadvantages:

  • They can't be seen by his teammates
  • They usually don't know the snap count so they don't know how much time there is to do an audible

As you can see the Safety has more advantages and less disadvantages then basicly anyone
Next came the Line Backer position
Then came the DE's and DT's
And last and least the Cornerback position

Of course, depending on the type of defense you would like to run, the intellectual capabilities and the leadership qualities may also add to the problem of choosing the captain on the field.

DEFENSE!!!!

The white circles are the defensive players.
The red circles are the offensive players.

Without the defense you will be
1. Disqualified
2.and if not disqualified you will lose because they can get points and you can't stop them.

On a defense there are always 11 players. Any more would result in a foul.

The Defensive Tackle's (DT) and the Defensive End's (DE) 'rush' the Quarterback and try to tackle him or pressure him before he can throw the ball.  During a running play Defensive ends will try to get in the way of the running back by getting in his running lanes and sometimes tackling him.

The Linebacker (LB) is an important player on the field. They fill up the running lanes which the Defensive end's and Defensive Tackle's couldn't. There are two types of linebackers. The Middle Linebacker and the Outside Linebacker's (in the picture it says SLB). These guys can also rush the QB  like DE and DF. They also can go after extra WR where there aren't enough CB to cover.

The Cornerback's (CB) (also says SB in the picture) are  another important player on the football field. They try and stop recievers from getting 'open' and not let them recieve passes for yardage, if they do catch the ball, they are usually responsible for any extra yardage after a wide reciever catches the ball. During Run plays they try to evade the WR and tackle the RB.

The Safeties (S) are responsible for cleaning up any mishaps on the field by other players... they are like the extra players and are used to clean up went wrong during pass plays. They can also rush after the QB like  a DE or DT. But on run plays they try to do what everyone tries to do. Fill the running lanes and crush the HB. There are two types of safeties: the Free Safety (FS) and the Strong Safety (SS). The SS is responsible for the running play and rushing the QB. the FS is trying to makesure no WR can catch the ball.

THE OFFENSE!!!

The offense is important to winning a football game becasue without it you usually will
1. be disqualified and
2.if you weren't disqualified then you would still lose.

The offense is the part of a team which focus is on scoring points to win the football game.

There are 11 players on Offense. anymore players would become a foul.

The Offensive line is the group of players on the line of scrimmage who block to help move the ball forward. The Offensive line does not catch or run with the football.
The Offensive line consists of the Center, who conveniently is the "center" of the line and hikes the ball to the Quarterback when he sends a message to the center to hike the ball.
On each side of the center are the Guards. The Right guard and the Left guard. On the right side of the right guard is the Right Tackle, and on the left side of the left guard is the left Tackle.

On the end outside of a Tackle is the Tight End. In some formations, there could be two tight ends, though typically there is only one. The tight end can block or go out for a pass from the Quarterback.

In addition, on the line of scrimmage is typically a wide receiver. There must be 7 players on the line of scrimmage (the line where the football is from sideline to sideline) and 4 players in the backfield (behind the line of scrimmage). The Wide Receiver runs out to catch a pass or block downfield on running plays.
In a typical offense, there is also a Slot back, also called a slot receiver (shown on the image above as Z) who typically runs a pass pattern or blocks on runs.

The Quarterback is often the most well known player on a team. He is responsible for running the offense, calling the plays and changing them (by sending signals to his entier team), starting each play by sending messages to the center. The QB either hands the ball off, throws a pass, or keeps the ball and runs for yardage.

In the backfield, usually directly behind the QB are two runningback, the Fullback and the Tailback(also known as half-back). The fullback is the first of the two guys and the tailback is the second one back. In a typical play, the fullback may block for the tailback, though there are a lot of plays where the fullback can get the ball.
